Calgary MEtro REgional Plan
This team project focused on updating the Calgary Metropolitan Region Board (CMRB) Growth Plan by identifying gaps in the current plan and proposing strategies for improvement. The process was divided into four phases:
Research & Mapping – Understanding the CMR through data analysis to identify areas where quality of life could be improved.
Risk Assessment – Identifying vulnerable areas at risk of not meeting growth and quality of life goals, then considering policies to address these risks.
Scenario Planning – Developing alternative growth scenarios to enhance the equity of vulnerable populations throughout the region.
Strategic Thinking – Anticipating future uncertainties and ensuring the Growth Plan remains adaptable over the next 30 years, building on previous risk assessments and scenario development.
Through our research, assessments and scenarios we determined that the current Growth Plan did not address the increase in certain vulnerable populations. Those who spent more than 30% of their income on housing, new immigrants, seniors, and commuters were all growing substantially. To address the growing risks to these populations we proposed implementing strategic placement of transit hubs, 15-min neighbourhoods and compact communities within the region.
