GOOD SPOT KIT

Developed with Adam Schwartz & Ian Hernandez for the Calgary Arts Development Authority: Project Grant Program under Activate YYC. The Good Spot Kit consists of a 10’ storage container designed to be rented by community associations and business associations to activate underutilized spaces throughout the city. The Good Spot Kit contains custom designed modular outdoor furniture, umbrellas, and an assortment of games. The container itself acts as secure storage and allows for active use with exterior solar LED lighting, a bar table, custom signage, and an awning window. During the development of this project, we discovered that the current land use bylaw presents significant barriers to activation efforts, making it cost-prohibitive for many community members. Through meetings with the city we advocated for updates to these regulations to allow for more accessible and flexible activation opportunities.

GOOD SPOT LOT

As part of a five-year growth plan with Activate YYC, the Good Spot Lot transforms an existing building into a vibrant, multi-use community space. Designed as a placemaking hub, it brings people together through creativity, practical services, and year-round activation.

The good spot lot offers:

  • Placemaking Consultation Offices – A resource for community-led projects and urban activation

  • Community Gallery – Showcasing local artists and fostering cultural engagement

  • Bike Repair & Tool Rental – Supporting sustainable mobility and DIY projects

  • Wine & Café – A cozy space for social connection and collaboration

  • Outdoor Patio & Event Space – Hosting markets, performances, and workshops

  • Art Murals – Enriching the space with vibrant public art

  • Winter Activation – In the winter, the patio transforms into a skating rink with firepits

ECHO OF SNOW - CHINOOK BLAST 2025

After working for Activate YYC over the summer I was inspired to design a public art installation. Echo of Snow was designed for the annual Chinook Blast event on Stephen Avenue in Calgary. Using pergola hardware and custom built 6x6 posts the frame serves as the foundation for holding two 6 foot snowflake shapes. Each snowflake is embedded with several infinity mirrors and thousands of colour changing LEDs to create an optical illusion of never ending depth.
Echo of Snow was built by Exhibit Studio.
